Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. As of 2012, the population of Vietnam was estimated at just over 90 million and it is the world’s 13th most populous country. Bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest and the South China Sea to the east, it makes an excellent base to explore Indochina.
The countries of Indochina have each received cultural influence from either India or China, to varying degrees. If you’re planning a China tour, or are more interested in Chinese culture, you’d be better off visiting Vietnam as this is more heavily Chinese-influenced. If an Indochina tour is more your thing, a trip to Cambodia or Thailand, with a more Indian-influence might be of more interest.
