Witness the locals selling and bartering fascinating goods at the night market, sit back and relax sipping wine whilst watching the sun set behind the Shan Mountain Ranges, and float along Inle Lake watching local leg-rowers go about their daily business. A journey through Myanmar is always a fascinating adventure.

Day 1 UK departure

Depart the UK with international economy flight to Yangon. We can also arrange departures from your local airport at no extra cost.

Day 2 Yangon arrival

Meeting and assistance on arrival and transfer to the hotel. Photo stop and visit city centre and colonial districts of Yangon. Then we proceed to Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market), before continuing to Shwedagon Pagoda which rises 326ft (99.3m) above its base. Erected more than 2500 years ago and enshrining eight hairs of Buddha placed in a treasure chamber deep under its base. It is the highest symbol of the people’s devotion to Buddha. We continue with a walk on the busy streets of downtown.

In the evening, the pavement turns into a night-market with a variety of goods on display. It is the opportunity to see “the real Yangon”.

Day 3 Yangon to Bagan

After enjoying your breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Bagan. Welcome to Bagan, known to be one of the greatest architectural sites in Asia. On the banks of the Ayerwaddy River, it is home to the largest area of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world, many dating to the 11th and 12th century. The shape and construction of each building is highly significant in Buddhism with each component part taking on spiritual meaning. We start our sightseeing in Bagan with the colourful Nyaung Oo Local market. Then visit the golden stupa of Shwezigon Pagoda, where the 37 pre-Buddhist ‘nets’ were first officially endorsed by the Barmar monarchy. The 12th Century originals were spirited away by a collector and are now reportedly somewhere in Italy. Then visit to Kyan-Sit-Thar U Min, which was built in the 11th century, into a cliff face, with frescoes. It served as a monastery and features a few small rooms, which were home to the monks. Next stop is Htilominlo – situated close to the road between Nyaung U and Bagan, built by king Nantaungmya in 1218 and where traces of old murals are also still visible. Continue to Ananda Temple, a whitewashed masterpiece of Mon architecture with four standing Buddhas, and the adjacent brick monastery with beautiful, well-preserved 18th century murals. Then visit Sulamani, more sophisticate temple styles, with better internal lighting. Constructed circa 1181 by Narapatisithu and the temple features two story’s standing on broad terraces assembled to create a pyramid effect.

The day is always finished off by going to one of the larger temples to get an incredible sunset view of the entire area; a truly magical experience!

Day 4 Bagan

This morning, wander through the village of Minnanthu to see how the local people live. Then visit Payathonzu (the name literally means Three Stupas), whose design is remarkably similar to Khmer Buddhist ruins in Thailand and two of the shrines contain vaguely Chinese or Tibetan-looking mural paintings that contain Bodhisattva figures. We then continue to Tayoke Pyay Temple – built by King Narathihapate in the 13th century, Damayasaka Temple – a complex pentagonal shape zedi, a contemporary structure at the time, and Lawkananda Pagoda – built by King Anawrahta during his reign in 1059 and situated on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. The Buddha’s tooth relic is enshrined in it, which was brought from Sri Lanka.

In the afternoon, enjoy your sightseeing by bicycle (or) horse-cart to Dhammayangyi, a massive-looking temple dating from 1170, which is famous for its interlocking mortar-less brickwork. To finish the day we transfer to the jetty and take a boat to see the majestic sunset from the Irrawaddy River.

Shan papers production cottages are also interesting to visit, where handmade papers are produced from the pulp of mulberry bark dried in the sun. Other cottage industry to visit is oiled paper umbrellas used by monks and nuns.

We used Emperor for a group trip to India. they were fantastic with their choice of hotels (some truly incredible) their tour guide, the whole programme and their choice of airlines for the trip. We made things quite tough for them with different members of the group travelling for different periods and arriving in and out of different airports. We specifically had some issues with one of the airlines on the return leg of our trip, through no fault of Emperor, but they did their utmost to put things right and made the journey home as pleasant as possible by meeting the cost of a lounge at the airport for us do to the shortcomings of one of the airlines checking in procedures. The pre holiday package of information was very comprehensive and we were presented with very durable luggage tags. We would have no hesitation in recommending Richard and his team in tailoring a package for a trip to India. We had an amazing culturally stimulating trip and will certainly go back to India in the future.
